Like a ship captain checking to see if his ship is on course, you need to check your business social media marketing to make sure you are heading in the right direction to achieve your business goals. Do you have a clear plan or goal for marketing your business in Halifax, Dartmouth, Truro and elsewhere in 2014?

It is important that you stay on course with your social media. To check my progress, I use a website called twtrland.com. I talk about how I use this site in my “Essential Twitter Skills for Business” eBook. The people at Twtrland are super and I recommend that you check their site out.

Having a clear and concise goal helps you when you sit down at your computer or grab your smart phone. If you do not know what you are about to do, chances are you are going to waste a lot of time. There are so many places and things you can do. Know where you are going and what you have to do first every time you do your social media. Make sure you have a plan or a task list to complete.

So take a moment today and ask yourself if you have a clear and concise goal for your social media marketing. Can you quickly write it down? If not, time to re-evaluate what you are doing.

The cost to you is your time. As a business we have to generate billable hours or sell products. Wasting our time is not a smart thing to do as a business.

So let me ask you this… “What is the first thing you do every time you go on your social media?” If you do not have a plan for your social media, you are not going to be effective at it.

So how do I do my social media? Here’s a general check list that use:

  1. Go to Twitter and check my followers. I follow back those followers who interest me and engage with others.
  2. I check my Twitter mentions and get back to people.
  3. I check my Facebook Profile and Page for messages and comments. I get back to people.
  4. I check my other social networks as well. And I get back to people.
  5. I start posting to the social networks after I have responded to people.

The list could go on and on. For me, responding to people is key to my social media success. I value relationships and people.

What will you do when you sit down to do your social media? I trust you have a plan not to waste your time?

So here’s to a great day of business for you.
